Carcassonne in winter: what to do and where to stay warm
Published on 26 October 2026 by Escapades Cocooning

In winter, Carcassonne is quieter and cheaper. The Cité, the Château Comtal, the Fine Arts Museum and the bookshops of Montolieu stay open, and the season has its own highlights: the Magic of Christmas, the truffle markets and the Limoux carnival. For the evenings, you will want a well-heated place, ideally with a hot tub.
What is open in winter?
Most things stay open, according to the Grand Carcassonne tourist office: the Château Comtal and the ramparts of the Cité, the Fine Arts Museum, the bookshops and cactus garden of Montolieu, the Truffle House in Villeneuve-Minervois, the Nougalet chocolate factory in Trèbes and the paper mill in Brousses.
A few sites close for part of the winter and reopen in early February: in 2026, the Limousis cave reopened on 1 February, the giant chasm of Cabrespine on 7 February and the abbey of Caunes-Minervois on 1 February. Check the opening hours on the Grand Carcassonne tourist office website before you set off.
Winter highlights
Three highlights mark the season, from December to March.
- The Magic of Christmas: in December and until early January depending on the year, Carcassonne lights up, with concerts, shows and street parades (programme on the Carcassonne tourist office website).
- The truffle markets: from December to February, one Saturday morning a month, in three towns of Grand Carcassonne, during the black truffle harvest.
- The Limoux carnival: from January to March, one of the longest carnivals in the world.
Our ideas for a winter day
In the morning, the Cité in peace. In the afternoon, the countryside. In the evening, the hot tub.
- Walk up to the Cité at nightfall: with its illuminations and a little mist, it has something magical about it.
- Spend an afternoon wandering from bookshop to bookshop in Montolieu, the book village.
- Drive up to the Pic de Nore, the highest point of the Montagne Noire at 1,211 metres, sometimes under snow.
- Warm up with a cassoulet: Castelnaudary, its capital, is less than an hour away.
Where to stay warm?
Our cosiest places in winter are those with a private hot tub or a stove. All are heated and 15 minutes from Carcassonne.
- The Cocon de Lenny: an indoor hot tub between stone walls, open 24/7, and reversible air conditioning. For two to four guests.
- The Cocon des Oiseaux: a chalet in the countryside with its outdoor hot tub under the pergola. A hot soak in the cold air, under the stars.
- The Cocon d'Ava: for a group or a family of up to 10, a large house heated by a heat pump and a pellet stove, with a pool table and table football for the evenings.
- Maison Büdda: a shared lounge by the stove and a homemade breakfast on request. Its indoor pool is heated from about March to October.
Booking direct, the Cocon de Lenny starts from €65 per night for 2 guests, plus a €40 cleaning fee per stay and the tourist tax (€0.72 per adult per night). And we share our guide to the region with our guests.
